Brand predicts that the environmental movement will soon reverse itself on four core positions: population growth, urbanization, genetic engineering, and nuclear power. On each, he argues, the evidence has already moved while the movement’s politics have not. Behind the argument is his account of environmentalism as a contest between romantics, who identify with natural systems, and scientists, who study them, and who treat admitting a mistake as the point rather than the failure.
